Spiral Staircase

Spiral staircases are not only a practical way to climb the flights of a building, but also a work of art. Today, it is fair to say that we admire spiral staircases for their authenticity and unique design, but they are especially rooted in function.

History of Spiral Staircases

These elegant stairs date back to the Renaissance Era when the Classics, and extravagance, were at the forefront of daily and sophisticated life. When it came to architecture and design, proportionality and mathematics were the prominent guides for architects. They travelled all over the world, and especially to Rome, just for inspiration. Of course, the spiral staircase held its own.

While there are several famous ones, the Bramante Staircase at the Vatican Museum is perhaps the most well-known. Shaped like a double helix of DNA, but well before DNA was discovered, the staircase continues to attract an audience. It consists of two staircases.

Spiral Staircases in Interior Design

Today, spiral staircases are especially popular in big cities where space is limited. This is because they take up about half as much room. Depending on the material being used, they are also extremely reliable for the outdoors. Whereas wood will require refinishing every few years, steel and aluminium can go at least a decade. Not to mention, spiral staircases are typically easier to clean and maintain than regular ones.

When materials abound, the options become endless for how staircases can look. The biggest limiting factor is the person’s budget. That being said, many people are opting for spiral staircases that might add an element of randomness or freshness to the room. Rather than matching the deck or flooring, they choose another material to spice things up. This further draws attention to the spiral staircase as a work of art, and makes it more a centrepiece in the room.

Staircases can range in price from as little as £3500 to as much as £100,000. The difference lies not just in material, but also design. It is fair to say that, as such, spiral staircases are one of the few household elements that can be designed to fit in or stand out, and be practical at the same time.

Spiral Staircases in Architecture

During the Renaissance Era, many staircases contained etchings or engravings, which further enhanced the graceful beauty of the structure. Today, such staircases are still being made, especially in million dollar homes. On the other end of the spectrum, there are do-it-yourself kits where a person will even walk you through the basic assembly process on the phone. When this is the case, spiral staircases contain much less of an architectural element, unless the room itself demands it.

All in all, spiral staircases can easily be a work of art and there are more ways than one to incorporate a spiral staircase into the home. It might even serve as a turning point in the interior design of the home. For instance, replacing a regular staircase with a spiral one will clearly create an elegant effect, and may move the direction of the house closer to a higher degree of class and sophistication. Whereas initially, little emphasis went to the interior design of the home, now, design is central.

Spiral staircases have inspired awe from onlookers and climbers over the centuries, and continue to do so in today’s world. Not only a practical element of the home or building structure, but also an aesthetic addition, they stand alone in style and elegance. And ranging in price, they can be accessible to everyone.
