CHORLEYWOOD HERTFORDSHIRE, WD3

about

The location house is situated in a small town, Rickmansworth in South West Hertfordshire. It is the first large modernist dwelling in Three Rivers District Council.

The 1200sqm house is always in touch with nature outside. There is a 9m high stained-glass façade as well as lots of floor to ceiling glass throughout the property.

From the street this looks like a two-storey house, but it’s in fact three- storey. Without digging up the back garden, the site’s natural slope has been reformed to produce a third, lower ground, floor that is at the same level as the original back garden. This sculpting also creates a sweeping front driveway and landscape which allows cars to descend to the garden level into the glass garage, which can be seen from the main living room and the swimming pool. The 15m length shimmering blue indoor swimming-pool is set within a glass complex surrounded by trees.

You enter the house at ground level via a double-height stained-glass lobby. As you move in you will see the open-tread stairway and its stained- glass backdrop. On this floor you will see the extraordinary curving cantilevering bar and entertainment area. This floor also has a luxurious home office and to the other end a guest suite.

Downstairs you get to experience the double-height dining/breakfast/kitchen and open plan living and entertainment area flowing onto the garden with 6m high sliding patio-doors. On this level there are also two reception rooms one with cinema sound facilities.

If you walk back up the stairs to top-floor, you arrive at the spiritual centre of the house, the temple. On this level there’s a meticulously detailed master bedroom suite with a free-standing bathtub in the en-suite. Four other en-suite bedrooms are on this floor.

The back garden/courtyard landscape continues the theme and pattern of the front curves and the coloured glass façades. There’s a sculptured in-situ concrete retaining wall with bench-projection.
