the house has one of the best preserved elizabethan interiors in the uk with original oak panelling, rich leather wall coverings and ornate plasterwork. the topiary garden is unique with its ancient cut trees and colourful borders. there is an orchard, high beech hedges, a pond, a willow maze and a rose garden. the park is a fine early example of landscaping with far-reaching views and the river kent flowing through it. there is over a mile of oak-lined avenue, a herd of norwegian black fallow deer and the distinctive bagot goats.
